Manfred Von Richthofen was the highest scoring German ace of WW1, a legend of the conflict. He started his military career as a cavalry officer, but when the stalemate of the trenches ground the war to a halt, he became a fighter pilot and quickly distinguished himself as a skilful flier. He rose his way up the ranks, eventually coming to command the Jagdgeschwader 1, which became known as the flying circus for the colourful paintjob of the planes, with Richthofen's own plane being well know for it's bright scarlet finish.
