Dimmu Borgir is a Norwegian symphonic black metal band from Jessheim, formed in 1993.
Dimmu Borgir (the band's name) is a place in northern Iceland, where local legends purport that it is an entrance or gate to hell. In Icelandic "Dimmu", is an adjective that means dark, and "Borgir" , is the plural of "Borg" which can mean city, town, castle, rocky hill, or shelter.
The band was founded by Shagrath, Silenoz, and Tjodalv in 1993. Soon after, Brynjard Tristan joined to play bass, and Stian Aarstad played keyboards
They are musically inspired by 80's black metal and heavy metal like Darkthrone, Mayhem, Bathory, Emperor, Celtic Frost, Immortal, Venom, and Iron Maiden.
Their lyrics revolved around Satanism, Anti-Christianity, Death, Misanthropy, and Occultism
Their success can be measured by bands like Emperor, Kreator, and Cradle of Filth.
