Stand By Me (by Rev. Charles Albert Tindley)

"When the storms of life are raging.....when the world is tossing me like a ship upon the sea..." - words from Tindley's 1905 gospel song. Are we there yet?
Weather is often a metaphor used in song lyrics -- rain and sun and the winds pepper our songs through the years. The Beatles had a song called Rain that used the rain and sun literally to present a song that was about attitude and how you respond to the rainy days - which may be a metaphor in itself for those tough times in life. The song, Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head (by Burt Bacharach and Hal David), is another song about rainy days and again about attitude with the line, "I'm never going to stop the rain by complaining."
But with Tindley's song and the lines about precipitation as a metaphor there is also the quite clear real-life expressions of faults and failures, persecution, and foes in battle array (a strategic arrangement of fighters and weapons in a battle). Through all the weather and troubles, in the song and in our lives we ask Jesus to be there, stand by us.
