Celestron NexStar 90 SLT Telescope Review

The Celestron NexStar 90 SLT is the perfect telescope for someone beginning in Astronomy. It is extremely light, very portable, and utilizes the awesome Maksutov-Cassegrain optical design. This design gives the user high magnifications in a small, compact package. The Maksutov-Cassegrain design is known as a "Planetary Killer" and for good reason. This small telescope has a focal length of 1,250mm which gives you nice view of the moon, planets, and even Globular Star Clusters. Double stars are easily split through this small telescope as well. This telescope has an objective diameter of 90mm which gives it good light gathering power for how compact it is.

The Star Locating Telescope (SLT) mount, is sturdy, and provides for accurate, smooth tracking. As with all Celestron NexStar telescopes, alignment is quick and easy. The system is very user friendly which is a big plus for anyone.

The telescope includes 2 Plössl eyepieces, a 25mm and a 9mm. With this telescope this equates to 50x and 139x powers. To get 139x power with this small telescope is really impressive. Jupiter shines through the NexStar 90 SLT.

This telescope also requires no collimation, as it is a Maksutov-Cassegrain. Collimation is very rare, and the telescope would need to go back to the factory to be collimated. This makes the telescope a perfect go-to telescope for camping, outdoor trips, dark sky visits, or for use as a spotting telescope. This is my grab n' go telescope, and I have been nothing but impressed with it.

The telescope is so short in length that you can use it to view objects at the Zenith, which is a great feature, as objects look their best when they are straight overhead. The NexStar 90 SLT is the "baby" in the Celestron NexStar SLT line-up, weighing only 20 pounds. Don't let this small telescope fool you though, it packs a lot of power in a small package, and is a personal favorite for how portable it is.

One recommendation I have is, if you can afford the Celestron NexStar 127 SLT, I would purchase that telescope instead. It has all the awesome features described above, but that extra 37mm of aperture will bring in even more light, and give you even better views. All in all, the Celestron NexStar 90 SLT is a phenomenal telescope for the avid outdoor traveler and beginner. Its portability is unmatched in any other computerized telescope, and it is an awesome telescope for the price.
