Most people today are not prepared to listen to an Italian bel canto adaptation of Shakespeare's great Othello. Giuseppe Verdi has probably forever set the musical form of the play in people's minds as highly dramatic and declamatory verismo Italian lyric theater. This does not mean, however, that there is no great music in Rossini's earlier adaptation. A good example is Rodrigo's 2nd act aria, "Che Ascolto," here sung by the brilliant Sicilian tenor Salvatore Fisichella.
