The Count is a short comedy film released in 1916, starring Charlie Chaplin, Edna Purviance and Eric Campbell. It was the fifth film that Chaplin made for Mutual Film Corporation. The plot revolves around Chaplin and Campbell, who work as a tailor's assistant and a tailor respectively, trying to impersonate a real count (Leo White) and woo Miss Moneybags (Purviance), a wealthy heiress. The film features many humorous scenes of Chaplin's antics at a high society party, where he clashes with the real count, the butler, the cook and the police. The film was directed by Chaplin himself, who also wrote the scenario with Vincent Bryan and Maverick Terrell. The cinematography was done by Roland Totheroh and George C. Zalibra.

The plot revolves around a tailor's apprentice (Chaplin) who burns a count's trousers while ironing them and is fired. His boss (Campbell) finds an invitation to a party at Miss Moneybags' (Purviance) house and decides to go as the count. Chaplin also goes to the same house, attracted by the cook (Eva Thatcher). He pretends to be the count's secretary, but soon gets into trouble with the real count (Leo White), who arrives unexpectedly. A series of comic mishaps ensues, involving other guests, a policeman (Frank J. Coleman) and a butler (James T. Kelley).

The Count was well received by critics and audiences alike. It was praised for its story, speed, spontaneity and originality. The film showcases Chaplin's talent as a clown and a filmmaker, as well as his chemistry with Purviance and Campbell. Some of the memorable scenes include Chaplin's table manners, his dance with Purviance, his fight with Campbell and his escape from the police.

The Count is available for free viewing and download at the Internet Archive . It has also been restored by Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna and Lobster Films in 2013 . The film is considered a classic of silent comedy and one of Chaplin's best works for Mutual.
