The Spanish Steps in Rome

The Spanish Steps were built in 1725 to connect Rome's Piazza di Spagna with the Trinità dei Monti church sitting on the hill above. The design was by a little known architect, Francesco de Sanctis and was financed by French diplomat Étienne Gueffier’s fund. The French connection was that the church was under the patronage of the king of France. The Spanish square, below, is named after the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See.
