Thanks to Cactus language school, I spent 2 weeks continuing my Norwegian studies in Oslo. In this video I cover how YOU can make the most of your language study programme abroad:
1. The best part of studying abroad is that you never really stop learning. You’re surrounded by the language wherever you go. From reading street signs, overhearing conversations, shopping at the supermarket, to eating in restaurants.
Your brain will start to process the language quicker and you’ll become more confident. Don’t be surprised if you feel tired at the end of your day or even after class. It can be tiring because your brain will be processing a lot of information around the clock, so make sure you have a good night's sleep.
2. Since you’re in an immersive environment you’ll pick up new vocabulary from your environment. Be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to where you see certain words and signage. This way, you’ll learn contextually and pull meaning of certain words based on what environment you see them in. When you see a new sign you don’t understand, I recommend trying to figure out what it could mean. Take notes on your phone when you see a word you don’t recognise or take a photo of it to refer back to later.
3. A big part of language learning and putting into practice what you’ve learned. If you don’t use it you lose it be brave and put yourself in situations where you can practice. Maybe do some role play with your host family or strike up a conversation with the shop assistant or the barista in a café.
4. Participating in the school’s social programme is a great way to make new friend but also practice your oral skills. By joining walking tours or day trips with other students, you’ll feel more relaxed in speaking and you’ll be able to practice and reinforce what you’ve learned in class.
If you’re a beginner, my tip is to use this opportunity to practice your introduction and personal biography. Once you’re confident with saying your biography over and over, you’ll become more confident with the language and this will flow into other aspects of your language learning.
5. Studying abroad means you’ll be exposed to normal patterns of speech including speed, accent, pronunciation, expressions and phrases locals use regularly that may not be taught explicitly in class. This can be daunting at first, but don’t be afraid to ask the person to repeat themselves, or to slow down. Practice how to ask these two questions in your target language as they will be your lifeline!
Taking a language course abroad is the new way to travel, once you try it, you’ll realise it’s the best way to experience a country. It’s highly addictive and fun!
