Harmony of Cultures, special performance of American Cellist Frederic De Wulf playing Turkish folk music including songs of Aşık Veysel and Barış Manço at the Fethiye Marina has been organized by the EU-Turkey Friendship Group
Harmony of Cultures, special performance of American Cellist Frederic De Wulf playing Turkish folk music including songs of Aşık Veysel and Barış Manço at the Fethiye Marina has been organized by the EU-Turkey Friendship Group on July 16, 2020. Online concert is the first event of the EU-Turkey Friendship Group at the European Parliament. Parliamentarian from European Parliament and Turkish Grand National Assembly, high level decision makers, including Faruk Kaymakçı, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, members of diplomatic community and lovers of Turkish music&culture joined the online concerts. The concert took place in Fethiye Marina, on the Aegean coast of Turkey, broadcasted via social media channels.
At the very beginning of the live concert Ryszard Czarnecki, Founding Chair of EU-Turkey Friendship Group, said “This is the first event of newly launched EU-Turkey Friendship Group at European parliament. Our Friendship Group has been launched last months to foster cooperation between Turkey and to EU. Through close cooperation with Turkish partners, we plan to organize cultural, intellectual and political debates, including on migration, environment and trade.” MEP Czarnecki added “Music has always been there to transcend boundaries: boundaries of states, boundaries of language, limits of the personality and people. Music is life and can bring harmony to those that listen to it. This is why I hope that you will enjoy today’s performance and that we can create more harmony between Turkey and the EU.”
During the concert American Cellist Frederic De Wulf played “I Walk On A Long And Narrow Road" (Uzun İnce Bir Yoldayım) the great Turkish folk music composer Aşık Veysel, passed away in 1973. Wulf also played songs of Barış Manço, who was a Turkish music legend and cultural envoy spent all his carries for cultural harmony between East and West.
Event was sponsored by Holident Dental Hospital Fethiye. Holident Dental Hospital's Çağatay Aras added “There is a turkish saying if your intention is good the consequence will be good. I think these words explains the reason why we are here. Neither us nor Mr.Frederic thought that this event will influence that much. We did this because we believed that this was a good idea including many sincere feelings, soul and love in it. Fethiye is a peacefull and beautiful place where 15.000 expats are living and they are a part of us and apart from giving dental service holident dental hospital acts like a bridge between the local authority and them. I would like to thank everybody for their attendance and hope this intention will help bringing our lovely country the targeted consequence.”
About Frederic De Wulf
Frederic De Wulf is a French born American artist. Attending master classes under world-class cellists Mstislav Rostropovich and Maurice Gendron cemented his love for the instrument, a passion that he has carried with him around the world to this day. Originally from France, Mr. De Wulf moved to the United States to pursue a university degree and career in film and marketing. Upon retiring, he and his wife Marta sold their home in Seattle, WA, to begin a life at sea on their catamaran, Sea Wulf. Over the last three years they have travelled 14,000km, exploring the seas and cultures from Portugal and Spain to Italy and Greece, finally arriving in Turkey where they have lived for the last year. His previous performance up in the sky, he played soothing notes composed by Anatolian bard Asik Veysel while paragliding took great media attention.

The EU-Turkey Friendship Group was inaugurated in June 2020 is a cross-party non-partisan platform that promotes high-level dialogue among European and Turkish decision makers, business community and civil society in order to bring Turkey and the EU closer and support its aspirations to be full member.
