"It was my experience with the Afro-Brazilian martial art, Capoeira, that provided the original impetus for "Medium". Through Capoeira I discovered the berimbau, a single-stringed instrument which is the sacred heart of the martial art. A spiritual authority, the berimbau has bound the traditions and songs of Capoeira throughout its 500 year history. Not only does its percussive sound dictate the tempo and style of a Capoeira dance, it also is said to provide a supernatural gateway to the spirit-world. I evoke this space between worlds in "Medium". Each movement is a different song practiced in Capoeira... The 'Louvação' is an invocation: an expression of gratitude to heroes of old, the teachings of Capoeira, and to God."
