2017 Nissan Pathfinder SV drive review: The family hauler, remodeled

The Nissan Pathfinder has been significantly updated, if not redesigned completely, for the 2017 model year, but this mid-cycle refresh has managed to change the looks of the popular full-size crossover to keep it looking new. Mid-cycle updates have turned into opportunities for automakers to freshen up the looks of the same model on the cheap, and quite a few have gotten good at making one of these updates seem like a complete redesign. This is one of them.

The changes on the outside are on the conservative side: The grille is still dominated by a large chrome frame, but the front fascia is actually less flashy than before. The sculpted headlights and LED daytime running lights are now in keeping with the looks set by the Maxima a year prior, and overall, the updated styling works well.

A 3.5-liter V6 connected to an Xtronic CVT complete with simulated shifts churns out 284 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque, and just like in the new Maxima, the CVT does a good if not 100 percent convincing impression of an automatic. This transmission and engine combo is still a bit louder than I'd prefer, but it is by no means the jet roar offered by a number of its competitors. The cabin keeps most of the noise out, but at least this CVT doesn't need to strain itself or the engine to accelerate or overtake; both are achieved with minimal fuss.
