Fourteen-year-old Susie Salmon lives in suburban Pennsylvania in the early seventies, dreaming of first love, photography, and a future that seems very close, until an encounter with her neighbor George Harvey cuts short her earthly life. Finding herself in a mysterious space between the world of the living and eternity, Susie watches over her family, where her father obsessively searches for the truth, her mother cannot withstand the pain of loss, and her younger sister gradually moves closer to a dangerous discovery. While Harvey continues to hide behind the mask of a quiet loner, the girl is torn between the desire for justice and the hope that her loved ones will be able to survive their grief. Peter Jackson’s supernatural drama, based on Alice Sebold’s novel, combines family tragedy, the tension of a psychological thriller, and a visually dreamlike image of the afterlife.
