Popular Bunraku puppet play staged in Paris

A popular Japanese traditional Bunraku puppet theater production, "Sonezaki shinju," or "The Love Suicides at Sonezaki," is being staged in Paris, with a touch of contemporary art.
The Japan Foundation sponsored a performing arts' European tour that kicked off last month. Paris is the tour's last leg.
On Thursday, an audience of about 1,000 packed a theater in central Paris to watch the production's premiere in the French capital.
The work, first staged in the 18th century, is one of the masterpieces of playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon.
It is the story of the double suicide of a clerk at a soy sauce shop and his prostitute lover.
Contemporary artist Hiroshi Sugimoto adopted a modern and simple stage design in his production.
A woman said she was impressed with how human the manipulated puppets seemed.
The performance will run until October 19th in Paris.
