Hello friends. As India continues its search for a multirole fighter aircraft to add to its fighter jet fleet, Russian state arms seller Rosoboronexport and Swedish manufacturer Saab Gripen are hoping to win over the Indian Air Force by showcasing their fighters at Aero India 2023.
Rosoboronexport has announced that it will be displaying the fifth-generation Sukhoi Su-57E fighter jet and the Checkmate light tactical fighter at the Air Expo, as reported by TASS. The press office stated, "Rosoboronexport will exhibit approximately 200 types of the most advanced Russian armaments and military hardware, including the top-notch Su-57E fifth-generation multirole fighter and the Checkmate light tactical aircraft."
The display of these fighter jets is significant, as it comes at a time of strengthening bilateral relations between New Delhi and Moscow amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. India had previously intended to purchase up to 144 Su-57 aircraft, but eventually cancelled the agreement as the Su-57 did not meet the IAF's requirements. It is unknown if Moscow will formally pitch the Su-57E to India again, but the display is expected to draw the attention of onlookers in India and other countries participating in the exhibition.
The Su-57E was also displayed at the Zhuhai Air Show in China last year. Despite setbacks in its development and testing, including a test flight in 2010 that resulted in airframe cracks and a crash during testing in 2019, Russia remains determined in its efforts to attract foreign customers for the Su-57 fighter jet.
In addition to the Su-57, Moscow is also seeking customers for its brand-new Su-75 Checkmate aircraft. Russian state-owned enterprise Rostec has reportedly expressed its willingness to invite India to co-develop the Checkmate fifth-generation fighter jet. A source told TASS, "A delegation of representatives from our aircraft-building companies will attend the Aero India air show. We plan to discuss cooperation in fifth-generation aircraft, with the intention of inviting our Indian partners to join the Checkmate light tactical fighter project."
The display of these advanced Russian fighter jets at Aero India 2023 comes as India searches for a suitable aircraft for its Multirole Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) contract. Saab will also be showcasing its advanced Gripen-E fighter at the event.
Swedish aerospace and defense company, Saab, has extended an offer to the Indian Air Force (IAF) for its single and two-seater Gripen combat aircraft models. According to the Economic Times, the proposal comes as India is yet to decide on a fighter aircraft for its MRFA contract, which experts predict will take some time to conclude.
