"Are you right-brained or left-brained? Although the right and left hemispheres work together, each side processes information differently. Usually, most people have a dominant side of the brain, but as we all have experienced in our work and daily life activities, knowing how to use both sides is important.
Most information taught in our schools is geared to the left side of the brain, which processes linear written and spoken information. The right side of the brain interprets information visually, creatively, and emotionally. Despite widespread recognition that right brain functions are crucial for learning, many of our public schools’ creative and arts-oriented classes have been cut back or eliminated. Are we limiting the development of our children's creative abilities at a time when they are becoming increasingly more important for a successful adult life?
In California, Delaine Eastin is making arts education an essential part of her state's required core curriculum. This week, Eastin, Stan Bunn, Ben Canada, and moderator Mike Pippi will discuss the creative skills necessary to build an information-based workforce in Oregon and explain how the arts can play a crucial role in their development."
