Roman Abramovich
He’s probably the most recognized Russian oligarch in the world. He came from a very humble background but he was able to rise and reach a net worth of $12.5 billion.
He grew in extremely tough conditions. His mother died when he was a little baby and his father died due to a car accident a when he was four. He grew up as an orphan in Komi Republic, in northern Russia. He spent a bit of time in the army but later got to Moscow to study at the time when the comunist regime was falling apart. He did various jobs like street trader and mechanic in a factory. Once completed the studies at Gubkin Institute of Oil and Gas and later started trading commodities for Swiss trading firm Runicom, where he later became a manager. He rose through the ranks until he became very close to Boris Yeltsin, who was the Russian president at that time.
In order to understand how future events played out you have to understand the historical and social background. While the oligarchs’ riches were spiking, average Russians were struggling and the comunists were rising again. So the oligarchs, who also controlled media, helped Yeltsin with his campaign but after Yeltsin won, they were even more powerful. After Yeltsin won, many state owned companies were privatized. Abramovic was able to put his hands, along with his partner Boris Berezovski, on SibNeft, the most important oil producer in Siberia.
A big turnaround came when Yeltsin left office in 2000 and Putin came in. In the meantime Roman Abramovic, after SibNeft operation, focused on alluminium producer in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia. Over there numerous murders happened for the control of the alluminium smelter until a company co-owned by Abramovic took over.
In the meantime Putin was facing war in Cecnya and criticism at home. Boris Berezovski, Abramovich’s right hand in SibNeft, started using his media holdings to publicly criticize Putin. Putin made Berzovski extradite but Abramovich didn’t make the same mistake and stayed loyal to Putin and got a piece of his old partner shares. He later ran for office in the chucotka state in the very far north east of Russia and helped build a very advantageous fiscal environment for SibNeft there. The region saw great growth with Roman Abramovich and received even more investments. Thanks to his work, he received the award order of honour. Once he ended he got his hands on Chelsea FC in order not to be fully dependent on Russian based assets.
Furthermore, his visibility gives him another protection just in case he would fell from grace with Putin.
He’s accused of bribery, because otherwise, he would have been harder to acquire positions in the companies he owns. He even faced different accusations of fraud both in England and Switzerland.
He’s also known for being one of the main owners of yatchs worldwide and also owns a Boeing 767. He also owns properties in New York City for $74 million.
He took Israeli citizenship. And has also bought hotels in Tel Aviv. He has also applied for having residency in Switzerland buti t was discarded due to his fraud allegations.
He’s a very active philantropist as well. He donated several billions for the developemnt of the chuckotka region, he donated for the construction of hospitals in Israel and he’s donated to organizations trying to contrast anti-semitism worldwide.
