She was born as Amanda Koci in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Albanian parents who fled from the country in 1991. Her mother was a clasically trained opera singer while her father was a pianist. At the age of 13 she came up with the name 'Ava' and adopted it because she didn't like to be called 'Amanda'. She had released music under the name 'Amanda Key' during that time. At the age of 14 she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in singing but was constantly rejected because she was deemed being too young. She moved to South Carolina then but returned at the age of 17 to Los Angeles. Then in 2016 she signed a record deal and released her first single under the name 'Ava Max' called 'Sweet But Psycho'. The song became a hit in various countries, topping the charts in Germany, the UK, Ireland, Norway, Sweden and many more. It also peaked at #2 in Australia and #10 in the US Billboard Single Charts.

In 2020 she released her debut studio album 'Heaven & Hell' which reached Top Ten across Europe, peaking at #2 in the UK and Norway and #7 in Germany. It also peaked at #7 in Australia and reached the Top 30 in the USA. It has been certified 3x platinum in Norway so far.
