Fretless Bass Guitar Practice

A long time ago, someone made a constructive comment on a video of me playing bass. It was to work on form and cleanness. So that's what I'm doing. A lot of this was me picking a few notes and playing them in whatever rhythm felt right. I once heard a quote I liked (attributed to Jerry Garcia when I heard it) and it was: "If you play a wrong note, play it again". There are no wrong notes in my book. Just confusing combinations of them. But if you repeat them, they eventually make sense and become groovy.

One one hand, I don't like how the fret markings on this bass give me a way to cheat when finding finger positions. But it really does make it easier for an inexperienced player like me to find the note I want. The downside is that I never had to hone my ear-pitch to the point where I could play without looking. So now I play a bit while looking at the fret markings and then try to keep it going without looking and keep my pitch on point. Toward the end, I was getting pitchy with the C-major stuff. Not terrible, but I can do better next time.

I would appreciate any playing tips from the pros in the audience.
