While Suevian night hunters had launched a raid against the Roman camp set up at the settlement of Numantia to reduce their numbers in preparation for an offensive the next day, general Marcus Aetius, a high-ranking commander of the Praetorian Guard who had been sent to secure the empire's borders against the agitating Germanic troops and to accompany a famous Roman senator, was furious and marched to the enemy's location of the attack, which had been revealed by a captured Suvian soldier.
