“Wall Street Survivor” as an Innovative Teaching Tool for Business English

Are your students bored of teacher-centered business class? Can you sense your student’s engagement and energy level crash like the stock market in 2008? Often, students feel intimidated and overwhelmed by the amount of jargon, theories and concepts they must learn about business and it has been a challenge for teachers to create an authentic learning environment where students can make meaningful business decisions and apply what they learn in class.

In this presentation, I will talk about how teachers can create a student-centered learning environment by using “Wall Street Survivor” to create a team based competition while incorporating lessons focusing on business vocabulary, reading, and concepts about the stock market and businesses. I will also show how the teachers can set up their own competition to host in their own classroom. “Wall Street Survivor” is an exciting free online game that simulates the real stock market in the United States. Participants of “Wall Street Survivor” can learn about the stock market and trade stocks for profit using virtual money. “Wall Street Survivor” gamifies the learning experience by providing a platform for students to compete against others to see who can generate the most profit.

Wall Street Survivor provides a unique opportunity for students to take on the role of Wall Street professionals by analyzing companies using business theories, assessing risks, and buying and selling stocks as they would in real life business. Wall Street Survivor allows students to have fun and complete like a game while the students learn the target business language and concepts naturally which makes it a valuable teaching tool for any business teachers.
