Tournemire’s extraordinary gift and Catholic fervour – both so vividly displayed in this improvisation, another of the group that Tournemire recorded back in 1930 – is here heard inhis powerful creation on the Te Deum.

“The privileged listener who witnessed these improvisations, who heard them, who saw this prodigious man at the console – they will never forget the emotions they owe to him!”

So said Tournemire’s pupil, Duruflé, who ‘wrote out’ those improvised paraphrases after listening to the 78RPM records. (However, a chord in Duruflé’s written score differed glarringly from that one Tournemire actually played.)
