In this video we learn how to design a nice simple 2d background that is suitable for a platform or running game.
The process is simple but it gives you an idea of compositing different designs such as clouds, mountains, trees, .... to make a background.

About Inkscape:
Inkscape is a free and open-source vector graphics editor. This software can be used to create or edit vector graphics such as illustrations, diagrams, line arts, charts, logos and complex paintings. Inkscape's primary vector graphics format is Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG); however, many other formats can be imported and exported.
It is similar to Adobe Illustrator with almost same capabilities.

Important Shortcuts:
Shift+Ctrl+F : Fill and Stroke
Shift+Ctrl+A : Align and Distribute
Shift+Ctrl+E : Export to PNG
Ctrl+mouse wheel : zoom in or out
Shift+click : set Stroke color on "Palette"
Ctrl+D : duplicate selection
Shift+click : toggle selection
Alt+click : select under
Shift+mouse drag : add objects to selection
Ctrl+mouse drag : scale preserving aspect ratio
Backspace, Del : delete selected node(s) "Node tool"
