How To Convert Public Private Putty's ppk Keys To OpenSSH Keys On Ubuntu Linux

In This tutorial, I will show you if you want to grab the private and public keys from a PuTTY formated key file you can use puttygen on *nix systems. For most apt-based systems puttygen is part of the putty-tools package.

Outputting a private key from a PuTTY formated keyfile:

$ puttygen keyfile.ppk -O private-openssh -o key.private

For the public key:

$ puttygen keyfile.pub -L

Here is how you can convert your PuTTY key to OpenSSH format using Puttygen Windows program:

Open your private key in PuTTYGen
Top menu “Conversions”-”Export OpenSSH key”.
Save the new OpenSSH key when prompted.
