Weird webcam behavior

I'm playing with a little Microsoft VX-700 webcam and C#. I got it up and running in the sense that the app. shows without any extra effects what the camera sees. But when you point the camera onto it's output, weird stuff starts happening. It's like two mirrors against each other on steroids. I guess that the more interesting effects of it (bizarre colors, swirly effects...) are due to some algorithms inside the driver of the webcam itself.
