------[0:24] What Is a Complex Coda?
To explain the term simply, a coda refers to the sounds that come after the vowel in a word. If we break down the word ‘text’ as an example, the vowel is /e/. Following the vowel, we have a string of three consonants /kst/. All of these sounds are in the same syllable, in the same word.

Today’s lesson will focus on words with increased difficulty, for example, words with four sounds in the coda. The reason we started with ‘text’ is that it is a great example of how native speakers usually simplify complex codas.

Examples include:
- texts /teksts/
- glimpsed /glɪmpst/
- instincts /ɪnstɪŋkts/
- attempts /ətempts/
- lengths /leŋkθs/
- sixths /sɪksθs/

-----[11:22] Pronounce 'angsts'
'angsts' is a 5 consonant coda for some speakers only. It is a German origin word, 19th-century borrowing. It means to be in emotional turmoil or pain, e.g ‘He angsts about modern life.’
