Carving spoons by hand is the best practice I’ve found to make anyone a better woodworker. It requires extremely sharp tools and an understanding of the way wood grain reacts to a blade. If you learn what sharp is, how to get there, and how to use that sharp blade to manipulate wood to do what you want, you’re off to the races. Spoon carving can be done anywhere- by the campfire, on the porch, in the living room with a bucket for shavings, or my personal favorite, as a way to pass the time while stuck in traffic. The coolest thing about spoon carving for me, though, is how resourceful you can learn to be as a spoon carver. You can use a variety of tools and myriad methods to arrive at the same result. Over the last three years, I have learned when and where to look for good spoon wood and how to make almost all the tools, sharpening, and work-holding devices I need to carve my own spoons.

Traditionally, spoons were carved with only three tools: an axe, a straight knife, and a hook knife. My first spoon with those three tools took about six hours to carve. Many, many spoons later, I’ve added a few more tools to my kit, I’ve figured out which corners I like to cut, and I’m now down to 20-40 minutes per spoon.
