Chaugnar and Abella originally being separate entities could mean that Chaugnar was originally supposed to be someone infected by the woodsman parasite, and that we were going to see more of them eventually (like the brain flowers from the first game). This isn't even partially true in the current version because Abella's Chaugnar form is the same regardless of whether or not she was infected (proof is the tower transformations: https://youtu.be/spMXh2y6ShY?t=419)
