The Greenland Paddle can give you all the support you need for rough water kayaking if you extend the paddle a little

For those who are new to the Greenland paddle, especially if you are used to a bigger blade, you may feel like there isn't enough support in rough conditions. I think the key is to learn to use it differently. Get comfortable with extending it. If you try to keep your hands in the paddling position at all time, you will struggle to find the support that will give you the confidence you are accustomed to.

On the other hand if you learn this very easy technique of sliding the paddle, you will develop a very powerful brace, and you will realize how effective the Greenland Paddle really is in rough water. More important than a strong brace is the speed at which you can apply it. That's where the Greenland Paddle really shines. Since it creates a lot of lift, you simply need to flatten out the blade to get instant support.

If you want to get good at extending the paddle instinctively you can get a storm paddle. It requires using the sliding stroke to paddle, so as you paddle you get some practice at extending it. Soon you will be using it extended naturally, for turning, or rolling, and bracing.

If you don't learn to be quick at extending you will not see the full benefit of the Greenland Paddle, and you may even feel like going back to a bigger blade. You just won't be comfortable in rough water.

It is quite surprising how much extra support you get from extending the paddle a little bit. I think its partly the extra leverage from the length but also it tends to keep the angle lower. The paddle stays more horizontal to the water, and dives less.

This video is about bracing when the waves are hitting you from all sides. In rough water you need a little more support from your paddle than you get from the regular paddling position. and you also need to be ready to brace on the other side, and fast. If you don't extend the paddle... You know that feeling you get when you have gone past the point of no return, and you know your brace won't hold you up? I'll show you how to get a little more support from your paddle so you won't capsize.

What you want to do is extend the paddle a little, and that will give you a surprising amount of extra support. If you move both your hands on the paddle to extend fully to one side, you will be in trouble when a wave hits you from the other side. You won't be able to move your hands fast enough to brace when a wave hits you from the wrong side.

If you keep your hands in the paddling position, without any extension, you may not be getting enough support for a strong brace, and you will capsize more often.

To do this partial extension, the hand on the side where you are bracing stays with the same grip on the paddle. The paddle is allowed to slide in the other hand.

If you practice doing this quickly, your brace will become very fast and instinctive. You will capsize a lot less, and will feel more confident in rough water.
