It’s the biggest Subaru sold today. The three-row Ascent SUV comes with all-wheel drive and enough seating to accommodate up to eight passengers. Powered by a torquey turbocharged 260-hp flat-flour engine bolted to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), the Ascent earned a 27 mpg rating on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test route. That’s marginally better than the last Mazda CX-9 and Kia Telluride we tested from this segment. The Ascent’s comfortable ride, massive infotainment touchscreen, and long list of standard safety features are admirable. But its significant road noise and a cramped third row keep the Ascent from, well, ascending to the top rank of the mid-size three-row SUV segment.
What's New for 2023?

Subaru refreshes the three-row Ascent for 2023 with a new grille design, revised lighting elements, and improvements to its standard equipment. The 6.5-inch and optional 8.0-inch infotainment displays have been replaced by a vertically oriented 11.6-inch touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now standard, and driver safety assistance such as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist have been improved within Subaru’s EyeSight safety suite. The Ascent now offers an optional 360-degree camera, and a Cabin Connect interior speaker system to help communication between first- and third-row occupants. The Onyx Edition gains green interior stitching, a panoramic sunroof, and additional drive modes with hill-descent control.

Living in a box isn’t so bad when the box is Volkswagen’s cavernous three-row Atlas SUV. Unlike many others in the platoon of three-row mid-sizers, the Atlas has a big enough rearmost seat to comfortably handle adults. The Atlas gets power from either a 235-hp turbocharged four-cylinder or a 276-hp V-6 that can tow up to 5000 pounds. Both powertrains come with an eight-speed automatic transmission and can be ordered with either front- or all-wheel drive. While we found the interior materials to be a little more corporate than in competitors such as the plusher Kia Telluride and Mazda CX-9, the Atlas’s vast interior space makes it more practical thanks to greater cargo room when the third row is folded. If seating and cargo space aren’t as important to you as style, the Atlas Cross Sport, which we review separately, puts a sporty spin on Volkswagen’s big German carton.

What's New for 2023?

Volkswagen simplifies the Atlas’s trim levels and makes a minor equipment change for 2023. The base Atlas SE starts the new five-trim lineup, as the previously offered Atlas S is no longer on the menu. VW has added its 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster as standard equipment for all trims above SE.
