What you’ll learn:
- Common greetings - ‘hi’ and ‘hello’ These neutral greetings are the most common ways for beginners to greet someone in English. In more formal situations, you might start an introduction in English by saying, ‘Good morning,’ ‘Good afternoon,’ or ‘Good evening.’
- Asking introductory questions - ‘how are you?’ and ‘how are you doing?’ These initial questions are a way to find out about how the other person is feeling and are considered polite. You could also say, ‘What’s up?’
- Formal and informal ways of answering introductory questions - ‘I’m/ I am fine’ and ‘thanks/ thank you’ These phrases are typical responses to the question, ‘How are you?’ or ‘How are you doing?’ Another response is ‘I’m good’ or ‘I’m well.’
- How to respond when you meet someone new - ‘nice to meet you’ and ‘pleased to meet you’ These polite expressions show conversation partners you’re happy to know them.
- How to use these expressions in real conversations. This is a sample dialogue of how these expressions can be used when introducing yourself in English.
