The 246 was a special chapter in Ferrari's history. It was a return to form for the Maranello factory after using modified Lancia D50's the previous 2 years, bringing star driver Mike Hawthorn the 1958 drivers championship, the first V6 to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix, and the final front engined car to do so.

The Dino engine was even more special to Enzo, for it was named after his son who had helped design it while dying in hospital of muscular dystrophy. The special 65 degree V6 would go on to power multiple Grand Prix and prototype sports cars, an entire line of mid engined street cars, and even the Lancia Stratos rally car of the 1970's.
