This advanced video tutorial shows you how to make animated menue buttons in gamemaker studio. You may have seen this style in a lot of indie games like nuclear throne because it is quite effective and very easy to pull of.

The idea is quite simple: Strecht an image when the mouse is hovering over the bounding box/collision mask of the sprite and when not let it retract. That can be done instantly or lerped to give it a smooth movement.
