How to play Eric Jonson chord voicing for wide spread Triads, Major, Minor & Add9 on guitar. This lesson shows several inversions for each of the chord-types listed above. Firstly we have a fully tabbed demo of Eric Jonston style chords, then a quick 101 on how to make these sorts of shapes using scales and intervals. After this, we analyze each one, getting into the nerdy music theory but exploring the intervals and how positioning them either close or far from each other, can really impact upon the sonic effect of a sound- despite being the same notes! A great way to start working on chord melodys, or adding some bounce, or rhythm to a static backing chord. A cool signature guitar trick, from a truly outstanding master of the instrument!

So if you want a set of rules:
At least 2 notes from the chord; you can use all 3 if you want.
Don’t play every string, have some unused strings in between the fretted ones.
The CAGED system is really handy for trying out new combinations of notes, but don’t forget to combine these shapes; or simply use interval mapping; oddly enough looking at new way to stack triads is how I first got in to the idea of studying intervals.

Obviously here, we just looked at 3 chords; albeit in many different voicings; you’ll want to use these shapes over chord progressions for maximum impact. I also purposely didn’t use open strings so these shapes were easy to transpose to different keys; that’s a whole new world in and of itself!

And yeah for an Eric Jonston tone; plenty of reverb and delays, maybe a tad of chorus a clean compressed sound and a light touch will get you in that ballpark.
