An op amp comparator circuit usually changes it's output high or low based on the non inverting input signal crossing the specific voltage set at the inverting input. Using positive feedback however, the output helps raise or lower the non inverting input voltage to help hold the output in it's current state. This creates 2 input signal threshold voltages and a middle ground hysteresis where the output stays in whichever last state it was put into.
