Simulation of two Oort cloud comets as they enter the Solar System.
C/2014 UN271 (Bernardinelli–Bernstein) is as of now the largest Oort cloud comet discovered. In spite of its size, this comet is unlikely to show any visible comet tail as it does not approach the inner Solar System.
C/2021 O3 (PanSTARRS). This smaller and dynamically new comet is likely to disintegrate as a result of its close encounter to the Sun. Its closest approach to Earth is 0.60 AU occurring on 2022.05.08.
The trails displayed in this video show 10 year trajectories of the celestial objects. Comet tails are not shown.
Planet distances and radii are correctly scaled with a fixed ratio. Except Sol which is downscaled by a factor 20.
Initial conditions were obtained from Horizons Web Application found on https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/horizons/
The simulation was performed using high order explicit symplectic integrators and was rendered in real time.
