According to Songfacts:

In 1969, Leary decided to run for Governor of California, and asked John Lennon to write a song for him.

‘Come Together, Join The Party’ was Leary's campaign slogan (a reference to the drug culture he supported).

Leary never had much of a campaign, but the slogan gave Lennon the idea for this song.

Lennon confirmed:

“The thing was created in the studio. It's gobbledygook. 'Come Together' was an expression that Tim Leary had come up with
and he asked me to write a campaign song.

I tried and I tried, but I couldn't come up with one. But I came up with this, 'Come Together’, which would've been no good to him - you couldn't have a campaign song like that, right?"

*Tuning*
Drop D (tune bottom E string down one whole note to D)

All other strings remain in standard tuning. This means all chords which do not need to feature the bottom E string (in this case A7 and Bm) can be fretted as normal.

When playing chords in the D family, you should play all the strings. Use the 6th (bass) string as your root for all Ds. This really builds the depth of the chord. Lovely bass.
