A pico cross flow turbine running on our test bench after painting prior to delivery.
This 2.5 KW cross flow turbine was designed and installed for energy recovery at Supreme Industries Limited. The company is India's largest plastics processors handling over 3,20,000 tonnes of polymer annually with 25 plants in various parts of India.
Plastic Injection moulding machines are used at the plants to manufacture various kinds of plastics parts. Water is circulated through these moulding machines to cool the dies. The water is pumped from an underground tank for circulation.It gets heated up after passing through the machines. This water is then taken to the cooling tower where it gets cooled down to room temperature and is returned to the underground tank.
A flow rate of about 70 litres per second and a vertical height of 6.5 meters was available between the cooling tower and the tank. The water was flowing under the influence of gravity from the tower to the tank. Thus it was possible to utilize this available height and water flow for power generation. Silverboat Technologies designed a cross flow turbine which was optimized for the site. We were able to recover 2.5 kilowatts of electrical power from the water which was otherwise simply flowing waste. The recovered power is directly fed to the grid for in-house consumption. Through the installation of this Pico Hydro Turbine, we were able to offset a part of their energy requirements. It directly led to a reduction in their energy bills.
The turbine will pay for itself in about three years. Beyond that, it will keep generating clean renewable energy for decades...
