How to Read METAR and TAF - For Student Pilots
Описание
In this video, I describe how to read a METAR or TAF by going through an example. I have chosen a lengthy example in hopes that I cover most of the things you'll likely see in a METAR.
The METAR starts with the airport code or ICAO identifier KDDC which is followed by the day of the month and time of day in Zulu time. Next, you will see an AUTO in this example which means the METAR is an automated station with no human interaction. Next up is the wind direction, velocity, and maximum gust followed by the visibility in statute miles. Following the visibility (designated by the SM for statute miles) you will find abbreviations for the various types of the weather being reported or forecast. In this example, you see a +RA and BR which translates to heavy rain and mist.
These weather abbreviations are not always intuitive (as the BR for mist shows us). So it's best to have a table of these definitions which I have posted to my Instagram. If you subscribe and follow me on Instagram, send me a direct message with proof and your email and I will send you a copy of all my Instagram posts in a PDF format. This is a great study guide and includes all the METAR/TAF abbreviations.
After the weather conditions will be the sky conditions which can be 1 of 6 abbreviations. In this example, we see SCT, BKN, and OVC which translates to a scattered, broken, and overcast layer, respectively. The numbers following these abbreviations are in 100s of feet. After the sky conditions and cloud layers, you will find the dew point which you can identify with the two digits followed by a forward slash / and two more digits. The 1st two digits are temperature and the 2nd two are dew point. After the temperature and dew point, spread is the altimeter setting denoted by the "A" at the beginning. In this example, the altimeter setting is 29.85.
The final section of this METAR is the remarks section and it is denoted by "RMK". There are a ton of different remarks out there so it's best to have a cheat sheet to remember them as not all of them are intuitive.
