The last scale we are going to take a look at in this mini-series is the Minor Pentatonic scale.

Just as we could define the Major Pentatonic as being a Major scale that leaves out notes 4 and 7, we can think of the Minor Pentatonic as being a Minor scale that leaves out notes 2 and 6

So in the left hand diagram you see the two-octave A Natural Minor Scale. And in each octave I have marked in grey, the 2nd and 6th notes of the scale. By leaving these out, we arrive at the A Minor Pentatonic scale shown in the diagram on the right.

To help you remember the sound of this scale I thought I'd show you an easy to play version of the song Sunny by Bobby Hebb. Here's a quick look at the end product.

As you can see this arrangement blends melody, chords and a bit of finger picking technique. In this lesson we'll cover the melody. If you want to go on to learn the whole arrangement - I'll cover that over the next couple of Sound Bites - Although not strictly a Beginners' level task, this is actually easier to play than it looks.

First, let's learn the scale. Here it is in slow motion.

Now to the melody for Sunny. We start this on E, played on the open top string ..then we jump up to a C which actually is the one note in this that comes from the third octave of the scale here on the top string at fret 8.

This is part of this run of four notes C A G E played all on the top string frets 8 5 3 and open. Next is D at fret 3 on the 2nd string then the notes C and A played on the 1st string 2nd fret followed by 2nd fret on the 3rd string.

Here's that opening passage again. We then start to climb back up via the route we came down C D E. Those four bars are then repeated. Next we play the notes E D open top string followed by fret 3 on the 2nd string then four notes like this E C D C then D on its own before repeating those four notes again E C D C.

Next comes a phrase using the same three notes EDC descending like this.
Joined by this pair of notes D C to one more repeat of our four notes E C D C.

I'll just talk you through that again : start with this pair E D then the ECDC then a single D to join us to the next ECDC then ECD descending then a pair DC followed by a repeat of ECDC. Finally a nice easy finish. EEEE D DD C.

Here's the complete of the whole melody at slow tempo.

Don't worry if you didn't catch every bit of that - I have tabbed it all out for you and you should be able to download that from a link beneath the video screen. In the next lesson we'll take a look at some simplified chords to go with this.
