Greetings and welcome to the world of Grand Seiko. Today, I'll be your guide to the Grand Seiko SBGR-061 Automatic. This 39.5 millimeter, stainless steel watch is best approached by highlighting its signature feature, its rich-gloss ivory dial. The dial is the source of personality in this watch. It's a beautiful contrast with the all-applied and fasted hour indices, as well as the high-polished and faceted dauphin hands at center.
Easy to read at a glance, it has a warmth to it, and a charm that's a wonderful compliment to the rich, dark brown crocodile leather strap. The watch also features a twin-trigger actuated deployant folding buckle, the idea being that when you're donning the watch or taking it off at bedside, you cannot actually drop it, thanks to the continuous loop once the buckle is joined to the opposite strap, and of course the thoughtful inclusion of a metal minder keeps any excess strap length elegant.
The watch also features a case that combines strong, masculine character lines, such as the lip of the conical bezel, with rich and sensuous compound curves, such as the curvature of the case flanks, and the gentle bevel of the lug shoulders.
The watch features what Grand Seiko calls its caratsu hand-laid case polish. More than simply a shiny, mirror-like finish, it's a series of polishing steps that ultimately renders the product almost as brilliant as the light touching it. Of course, the analog in Swiss horology would be something like poli-noir, or black polish, but this one has even more radiance to it, such that it takes on the aesthetic almost of metal in its liquid form.
Moving outboard from the dial, we find our way to the movement, and the movement is the heart of every Grand Seiko product. This one is the Caliber 9-S-65 automatic. It features a superb 72 hour, or three-day, power reserve, assembled and tuned entirely by a watchmaker at Grand Seiko's atelier. It's adjusted in exceptional six-position, more than the typical five for chronometer grade watches. Of course, constructed entirely in house, everything from parts as large as the baseplate, to parts as subtle as the lubricants, are designed and executed entirely by Grand Seiko, up to the point of creating their own springs, both hairspring and main spring to drive the watch.
Of course, it features refinements such as the hacking, or stop seconds, such that you can halt the balance and synchronize to a reference time by pulling the crown, and of course you can set in this position, as well. It also features a quick set function for the date in the intermediate position between winding and setting, such that you can rapidly correct the date indication should the watch run down or encounter an irregular length month.
Grand Seiko rates this watch at 30 meters, or 3 ATM, which is sufficient for daily use, everyday exposure, such as raindrops, or splashes while washing the had. Finally, the definition of the dial comes courtesy of a box-section sapphire of exceptional clarity, completely distortion free, like every other part executed in house by Grand Seiko.
