According to the plot, Christophe is a French defectologist, catholic missioner, comes to a Russian village, in the early 90s, to work in an orphanage school for children with mental disabilities. To treat these difficult patients as people carrying the image of God, to love them and to try to awaken love for them in others - this is, in fact, Christoph's mission.
For people with disabilities the path to God can be direct and short.
The Frenchman Christophe is one of those who want to realize themselves in serving the pariahs. "Why did you come to Russia?" - they ask him. Christophe limits himself by the answer: "It is difficult for you now, and I must be where it is difficult."

However, difficulties lay in wait for Christoph where he did not expect them. No everyone in the village likes the work of the Frenchman. A drunk former physician of the orphanage has an acute dislike for the "stranger" (of course, the most beautiful girl in the village, the nurse Vera, that he likes himself, sympathizes with Christoph and there is the emergence of a romantic feeling between them according to one of the plot line) and tries to turn those around him against the volunteer. So it leads to a fatal end: the hero absurdly dies with the hands of an oligophrenic. But on the initiative of Christoph, the abandoned rural temple is put in relative order and consecrated.
The film is based on a real story, although in fact no one killed the prototype of the protagonist (in life his name is Bruno Leonesek).

The film includes footage of the real baptism of the children of the orphanage school, which was performed by the Orthodox priest Vitaly (based on the film - Father Nikolai, who also visits these children).
