London’s burning!
September 1666.
Early in the morning at 1 a.m.
As London town was sleepy
A tiny spark lit the dark
And the fire it came a-creeping.
Thomas woke to thick black smoke
He'd never seen such a thing.
They lay the blame on Pudding Lane
And the baker to the king.
He set it on fire, burn it all down
Is that the end of London Town?
It`s gone up in flames like kindling sticks
September 1666.
At the Star Inn on Fish Street Hill
The landlord stood a-weeping
As the wind it blew, the sparks they flew
And the flames they started leaping
The streets were so thin they couldn't do a thing
To stop the fire from spreading
For three more days it blazed and blazed
It was the nightmare they`d been dreaming
I wish it was raining and pouring
Oh poor old London town.

The Great Fire of London
London if the middle of the 17th century was an overcrowded city. The streets were narrow and dirty. The summer of 1666 was very hot. The wood-built houses were bone dry. On the 2nd of September the Great Fire took place. It is believed that the King’s baker Thomas Farynor didn’t put out the fire in one of the ovens and the spark from the fire’s embers ignited some straw on the floor. The flames engulfed the house of the baker in Pudding Lane. It was impossible to extinguish the fire. It is astonishing, but the Mayor of London didn’t give the order to demolish neighboring houses. He paid dearly for his decision. Soon all city was on fire, because the wind was blowing and the fire spread quickly. It raged for four days until the winds died out. The fire destroyed over 13000 houses, 87 churches and 4 bridges.
A column - called the Monument - near London Bridge still commemorates the Great Fire of London. Christopher Wren, the famous architect of that day, took part in rebuilding the city. Wider streets and brick houses were built. Wren built the present St.Paul’s Cathedral. He lays buried under the roof of his own great work. These words are written on his tomb: “If you want to see his monument, look around”.

Water pollution
We never know the worth of water till the well is dry.
Have you ever thought about children from Africa who die because a big part of water has been polluted?
Children in Kenya often have to go many kilometers to collect drinking water. Do you think about YOUR future?

Water pollution
Water is necessary for life. Pure water is a precious resource. Water pollution occurs mostly, when people overload the water environment with chemicals and grass clippings harmful to aquatic creatures. It also spells bad news for people because toxic wastes float into the seas and rivers. Chemical substances like soaps and detergents get into water and soil, making it dangerous for us. Nowadays we can restore our waterways. We mustn`t throw any wastes down a drain. We must reduce excess water runoff. For example, we can sweep, not hose the pavements near the house and paths in the garden. We must clean a car with a bucket of water instead of a hosepipe. We must use natural fertilizers like compost in the garden. Eventually we will be able to stop water pollution.
