Описание

Boris Shtokolov (1930-2005 was one of the great basses of the 20th century. Not too well known in the US because so many great singers of the Soviet period did not sing abroad, and all too often their recordings were not known here either. But ask any Russian opera lover who the greatest basses in opera were in the 20th century, and, be assured, you will hear about Boris Shtokolov! He sang for 30 years, between 1959 and 1989 at the Mariinsky, starring in such roles as Ruslan, Don Basilio, Boris Godunov, The Demon, Prince Gremin, Mefistofele, and others. So popular and respected was he that he was awarded the titles of People's Artist of the Soviet Union, State Prize of the USSR, the Order of Lenin, The Order of the Patriotic War, and others! Truly a Russian superstar of opera! He also did a lot of folk singing, as did Chaliapin before him.
