The Ligo or Gravitational Wave Observatory of the Laser Interferometer is a physics observatory for detecting cosmic gravitational waves and developing observations of gravitational waves as an astronomical tool. Two large observatories were built in the United States to detect gravitational waves by laser interferometry. These can detect a change in the mirror spacing of 4 kilometers, less than ten thousandths, the proton load diameter, equivalent to measuring the distance to the star Near Centaur with a precision smaller than the width of a human hair.
