mmWave radar sensing in smart home surveillance
Most smart home surveillance cameras come with IR wake-up sensors so that the smart cameras remain sleep until the wake-up sensors are triggered by detected (human) motion. The detection capability of IR sensors are limited: they cannot measure the objects’ coordinates. The triggering regions cannot be chosen or accurately set, and therefore false alarms happen quite easily by large object outside the desired detection ranges.
Unlike IR sensors that detect the intensity of the motion, Terasilic’s 2D radar sensors incorporate MIMO technologies in radar sensors to directly measure multiple object’s coordinates as well as their motion; therefore the accuracy is not affected by the size and other environmental conditions such as temperature and lighting.
The video shows an experiment where a region of interest (ROI) sized 2-meter by 3.5-meter is defined in a room, and the ROI is defined by user through the GUI. A lamp is connected to the sensor and is enabled when a person in the ROI is detected. The measured coordinates of the person with respect to the ROI (red rectangular) are displayed in the lower left of the screen.
The video clearly shows that a person walking outside the ROI never erroneously triggers the radar (or the lamp). As soon as a person enters the ROI, the lamp turns on immediately.
