Hi Octane is a scifi combat/racing game made by Bullfrog in 1995 where you not only get high speed hovercraft cars but also guns to shoot your competitors.

Shooting or destroying them does not disqualify them from the race. They are only immobilized for a short amount of time before the repair vehicles come and get them back on the track but it surely gives you the advantage in the race.

You also have a booster which you can load up to get even more top speed. That is often vital for success because the enemies will use it and if you don't you will have no chance of ever catch up.

On every track there are powerups, sometimes in the middle of the track and sometimes hidden. There are also shortcuts you can find but you have to have good knowledge of the tracks and good control of you vehicle to use them the right way.

However with the powerups it is possible to upgrade your machine gun your rocket launcher and your booster to level 3. But if someone destroys you, you lose some of those powerups and have to pick them up again.

Another thing you also have to watch out for in the race is your fuel. That is right you can run out of fuel here. If you do you have to wait for the repair vehicles. To prevent yourself from running out of fuel/shield or rockets, there are little areas on every track to refuel them. It goes pretty fast and mostly will not take more than 2 seconds.
