THE BRASS SEPTET ASTRA The Brass Septet Astra from Lahti was established in December 1997. The septet has worked actively from the very beginning and only after few months of rehearsals it won the biggest prize at Kimppapuhallus event organized by Mikkeli Music College. In August 1998 Astra was awarded the second prize in the first Johan Willgren Competition for Brass Septets in Helsinki. Due to its competition success Astra has been invited to perform during the Johann Willgren Music Week in 1999. In the summer 1999 the septet will also travel to Germany to do a concert tour. The members of the Astra Brass Septet are teachers and students of the Lahti Conservatoire and its concert programmes include music from Vivaldi to modern pop music. The arrangements are by the teacher members of Astra: Kari Karjalainen and Heikki Hannula.
KARI KARJALAINEN Kari Karjalainen (b. 1953) has studied trumpet (Erkki Karjalainen as his teacher) and composition (Erik Bergman and Einar Englund as his teachers) at the Sibelius-Academy. He has studied further at the Zyrich Conservatoire, the Eastman School of Music in the USA and followed master classes held by Timofej Dokschizer and Henry Adelbrecht among others. Kari Karjalainen has been the principal of Nurmijarvi Music College, trumpet teacher at Espoo Music College and since 1985 has taught at the Lahti Conservatoire.
In addition to working with The Brass Septet Astra and The Finnish Chamber Brass, Kari Karjalainen has also had a long-term working relationship with organist Kalevi Kiviniemi. The duo has so far released four CD's and it has given concerts not only all around Finland but also in Germany and Switzerland. As a composer Kari Karjalainen is more or less a modernist, whose melody lines are long and harmony bitonal or atonal. His output so far has been mainly chamber music. He has also made many arrangements for different ensembles.
The cornet players of the septet use Yamaha's deep 16 E mouthpiece. Due to its use the tone is very soft and warm - The British Brass Sound. Members of the Brass Septet Astra:
