EDIT- something I forgot to mention (though this kind of goes without saying): make sure to reduce the background noise in your recording environment before you start recording. This includes things like closing windows and doors, turning off or moving noisy equipment, silencing phones, and just generally making the recording room as quiet as possible. You only want to record your vocalist (and the ambient reflections of their voice), and not any extraneous noises.
