12/30/1981 Islanders at Rangers (most of game)

Poor video quality (sorry!), but a rare regular season win over the dynasty era Islanders. Coming into this game, the Rangers had lost eight straight to them, including the 1981 playoff sweep, so this win was badly needed.

A typical high scoring 1980s game that was up for grabs until late in the 3rd period. Two fights in the game, Johnstone-Sutter in the 2nd period, just after a Ranger goal, and the more famous one, the Gillies KO of Hospodar early in the 3rd. (Better quality video of that one is available on other You Tube channels).

This was also the night that Gretzky got his record 50 goals in 39 games, scoring 5 vs the Flyers in Edmonton. During the post game wrap-up shown at the end of this video, color man Phil Esposito sees that #99 has 2 goals already, sighs and says "there goes my 76", referring to his old season goal scoring record from 1971.
