Tulipa praestans is a beautiful bright scarlet red tulip species, native to central Asia and introduced in cultivation in the 19th century thanks to Eduard Regel, famous plant hunter. The genus name Tulipa originates from the Turkish word "Tulben" meaning "Turban", probably in reference to the flower shape when the flowers are not fully open. The specific name "praestans" in Latin means "excellent, outstanding"and certainly you can understand the reason of this specif name, thanks to the beauty of such a spectacularly red flower. "Fusilier" is a cultivar or Tulipa praestans and this cultivar gained the RHS award of Garden Merit. There are different varieties of Tulipa praestans but this is definitey one of the most common., valued for the small size (about 15-25 cm tall) and the fact that is a multi-headed Tulip species, blooming usually with two or three flowers, not with just one flower per bulb to enjoy, as most tulips do. Also, this tulip usually bloom year after year, unlike highly selected garden cultivars that tend to become smaller and smaller after planting. It is true that this variety produces flowers smaller than many other garden varieties, but the presence of multiple flowers in combination with such a vibrant scarlet red in my opinion justify the popularity of Fusilier among gardeners. This plant is great for pots, front borders and gardens thanks to the small size. Fusilier is hardy between zones 3 to 8.
As usual for many spring blooming bulbous species, the bulbs of Tulipa praestans need to be planted in autumn in well drained soil, and the plant thrives in full sun or at least partial shade. In summer the foliage dies down and bulbs can either be lifted and divided, or left in place keeping them as dry as possible.
